I originally bought the cabin for the natural charm it had to me, and it was a fixer upper, it is now named Serenity's Nest! My family has been in the area for over 50 years. When I saw the serine beauty of the river and the many birds' nest that are located on the large beam on the porch, I knew this was the one for me! The previous owner had built it himself, but it was never finished. He installed most of the wood on the walls which is pine and recycled barn wood! The 900 ft cabin has become a place for my creations! It started with the balcony and the outdoor picnic table that is one of the first large pieces I constructed. From there the cabin has had many unique features added that are artistic and unique in nature. The cabin is only 50 ft from the river and when laying in the main bedroom you have an awesome view of the trees, the sky, and the river! The peacefulness is spectacular to me! I have completed all of the work myself with some help from friends and family! Each year something new and original is added! In 2018, the new upstairs floors and two stone walls in the living room were installed. The main bedroom floor I created with pennies and glow in the dark dust. I luv nature and have tried to bring it into the cabin. The design travels from the entrance door to the balcony door. It is a giant glow tree that leads to the tree lady face! Shes awesome! It's hard to capture the glow on camera, the best way to see it is to visit! I think it turned out well! Then on the balcony is the awesome claw foot tub for a unique soaking experience with hot water of course. I can soak for hours among the trees and all the beauty of nature. The other upstairs bedroom now has reclaimed 100-year-old barnwood on the floor, with a unique door that my friend created. I completed the art on the roof and it can be seen from far away! One side is a giant birch tree with birds and the other side is an eagle's nest with mom and dad and two babies. The downstairs floors and kitchen were remodeled in 2016 after suffering a pipe leak and flood. I used applewood and cedar wood with glows stones and aquarium stones to create the different objects that include turtles, flowers, angels, and faces, all the glows' stones create a unique viewing experience for each person. The path will lead you in complete darkness from door to door! The kitchen cupboards are a recycled store ice cold keep cabinet, that I reconstructed to fit, the countertops are made from cherrywood that I purchased from a personal mill owner who helped to cut the floor wood pieces. The tub sinks are large and useful. The downstair bedroom now has a black light piece of art that came from an artist in the UK, the walls and floor are from very old, recycled barn wood. The fence is available for you to paint, I have paint available for your art.
The property is on one acre of land that has a privacy fence on one side and a wooded lot on the other side. It is very private and secluded but close to town. Houghton lake is 5 miles east and lake city is 15 miles west. The Merritt speedway is 5 miles and has races every weekend in the summer. The river has a stairway for easy access and is lots of fun to wade, explore or float in! There are many crabs and small fish that will gladly eat crumbs and the chipmunks luv handouts as well. I have seen many different bird species fly down river along with deer and many other creatures, and once a bear was spotted. Reidsburg dam only 3 miles away and is a good place to fish or swim! There is a lot of surrounding trails and state land close by. I may be there at the barn, staying in my camper! I am always a phone call away for questions, and to help as I can.
I have two 2 person kayaks that are available to rent prior to your stay. One for 25.00 for two days use. They must be moved and returned by you, paddles and some life jackets and cushions are available.
Merritt is a very small town! It has a general store and a post office. There is a party store on the corner that is one mile from the cabin. East on 55 a few miles. A bison herd is sometimes viewed from the road near the fire department. Wendysnest45@ gmail.com
Recreation.: Houghton Lake offers many activities. Lots of shopping, a very old movie theater, boat and skidoo rentals available. There is a state boat launch and room to park your boat at the cabin. Merritt Speedway just minutes from the cabin. Lake City 15 miles from the cabin.
