The town is on the Midland Highway South of Ballarat on the road to Geelong. Buninyoung was proclaimed a town on 27th June 1851.
There is a lot of walking tracks around Buninyoung and up the mount.
Mt Buninyoung is a great for a walk, run, ride or drive to the top with great views.It is a extinct volcano.
Buninyoung also hosts the famous Australian Toad National Championships each year in February.
The Botanical Gardens is a lovely place to have a walk through with playground and BBQ facilities. The old concrete Rectangle wall that now has a garden was the old swimming pool.
