The Neighborhood
The West Village is a quiet neighborhood that is considered "up and coming" and "trendy. It is largely residential.
Some things we love that are walking distance:
Sister Pie - Marrow - Mamma Mia - The Red Hook Coffee - LCD yoga and Cycle. -Two Birds Bar - Detroit Vegan and Soul - Metropolitan Kitchen - Barkside Dog Bar
There are two James Beard nominated establishments one block from the property; a new school, new park, and massive luxury apartment building in addition to a cute bookstore, wine shop, and more are all within a 5-7 min walk. If you step onto the other side of Van Dyke, you will find yourself in Indian Village: a neighborhood well known for its sprawling mansions and architectural gems that once housed the Fords and Lelands. The West Village, itself, is in the National Historic Registry because of some of the stunning properties built between 1900-1925, many of which have recently been restored or renovated.
However,
Like EVERY SINGLE neighborhood in Detroit proper, there are many homes and buildings that have seen better days and just as many that have been completely abandoned. There are several books dedicated to the ruins of Detroit and it has only very recently begun to emerge from infamous neglect. If you are not familiar with this city, the landscape of Detroit can be alarming at first.
The Villages are considered to be very safe and friendly neighborhoods. However, if this is your first trip to Detroit and you have any concerns about crime and safety, we encourage you to take look at any of the various neighborhood crime maps available on the internet. Detroit Metro Police has their own crime tracker that is updated by the hour. We feel very good about what's happening in the Villages, and we want you to feel comfortable during your trip!
We love this neighborhood! It has some excellent food, coffee, shops, and most of our neighbors are lovely, friendly people. We hope you will love it too.
