Torrington is situated on a hill top with 360° countryside views surrounding it and steep drops to the valley below and the River Torridge. This breathtaking scenery has remained practically unchanged since the classic novel ’Tarka the Otter’ was written in the 1920s by Henry Williamson. The large kitchen/dining room, with its huge oak table, is the ideal place to host a celebration meal, and the living room has a cosy open fire to curl up beside with a good book and a glass of wine. A second living room also provides a place of escape for both young and old, and has a 55" Smart TV which can be used by guests to challenge each other to a game on the Wii, or they can simply watch a good film together. There is also the Dartington Crystal Factory and the local swimming pool within walking distance, and for garden lovers, the RHS Gardens at Rosemoor are just a short drive away. Towards the end of the 12th century, 365 acres of land surrounding the town on all but the eastern side was given to the people of Great Torrington. Now known as The Common, the area is freely accessible to all, and visitors and their four legged friends, can walk the 20 miles of footpaths. It extends from the golf course in the north to the ancient wood and wildflower meadow in the west, and then down to the beautiful River Torridge valley to the south of the town.
